Volunteers wanted for Iskandar Johor Open
150 helpers needed daily for tournament

JOHOR BAHRU (10th Sept 2008) – The Iskandar Johor Open 2008 (IJO) is looking for golf enthusiasts to sign up as volunteers during the four-day event here.

Some 150 volunteers are needed as marshals, walking scorers, leader board scorers and for other roles during the championship from Oct 30 to Nov 2 at the Royal Johor Country Club (RJCC) here.

Some 156 star players are due to take part in the IJO 2008, providing a stunning breadth of field, including some of the world's best ranked professionals.

They include World No. 3, Vijay Singh, who has been buoyed by a series of victories after winning the Barclays Classic in mid-August and has since gone on to clinch the Deutsche Bank Championship as well on Sept 1.

Defending champion Artemio Murakami of the Philippines and Malaysian pros Ben Leong and Airil Rizman Zahari will also be in the players' fields this year.

The IJO, which is into its second year this year, is one of the biggest golf tournaments in Malaysia with a prize money of US$500,000.

The championship, which is sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the Malaysian Golf Association, is supported by the Johor Government and Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA).

With the return of this prestigious event, the Asian Tour will hit an unprecedented 30 tournaments and nearly US$40 million in total prize money this season. This is a new record in Asian golf history.

RJCC general manager Majid Manjit Abdullah said volunteers signing up for a half day, whole day or full duration service will receive free golf apparels courtesy of TaylorMade, one of the corporate sponsors of the IJO 2008.

They will be given pre-championship training and access to a special 'volunteers' tent' with food, refreshments and television.

In addition, a week after the tournament the volunteers will also get the chance to play a complimentary round of golf on the championship course.

"This is a unique opportunity for golf fans and beginners alike to play their part in a world-class Asian Tour event and get up close to the best professionals in the game, " said Manjit

"It really is the best possible way for any aspiring golfer to help their own game by being right next to the world's current crop of great players," he added.

Volunteers can contact IJO 2008 chief marshall Benny Yaw at 0127788999 or via email at sky.bennyyaw@yahoo.com for registration.
