Royal Johor Country Club’s origins can be traced back to the sixties, when only nine-hole golf courses were available in the State of Johor. In the case of
Johor Bahru, the course was at the Royal International Polo Club.
In 1968, a group of enthusiastic golfers, mainly government servants, got together and successfully convinced the State Government to build an 18-hole golf course. Land next to Tasek Utara (North Lake) was allocated for a golf course, which gave rise to the incorporation of The Johor Golf Club in February 1968. The name of the Club was changed to Tasek Utara Golf Club in 1971 to reflect its location.
Opened in 1972, it was known as the Johor Golf Club and was the first 18-hole golf course in Johor. The Club was officially opened by the then Prime Minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak, in 1975. In 1983, Royal status was bestowed on the Club by His Majesty the Sultan of Johor, and the club's name was changed to Royal Johor Country Club (RJCC).
The Club’s Clubhouse was originally in a little wooden structure built from timber donated by the then Tunku Bendahara Johor. The old house remains on the Club’s grounds and is now the Johor Junior Development Centre.
The site of the new golf course was originally within a water catchment area and the terrain was covered with virgin tropical jungle. The original jungle trees were retained, making the course very difficult when one missed the fairways.
The course was extensively upgraded in 1991 and 1992. Much of the original jungle was retained, creating a naturally scenic course. Spread over sweeping terrain, the course challenges both the golfer’s physical and mental skills. RJCC is one of Malaysia's big courses and favours long hitters, with generous fairways on most holes. Today, it is one of Johor’s most popular courses.
RJCC continues to be the driving force of the Johor golfing scene, as the base of Johor’s junior golf development programme. Under the programme, which is open to the public, golfing equipment is provided free for students who cannot afford their own clubs. The youths are coached at the Johor Junior Golf Centre (JJGC), which is fully funded by the Johor Sports Council and essentially functions as a nursery for budding golf talents. Since its opening in April 2008, the JJGC has already attracted 200 junior golfers aged eight to 17. Some of these players have
gone on to excel in national and international tournaments.
Many more developments are planned for the coming year, which will progressively improve the visitor and player experience with every tournament.
